Learn Kanji Readings
Welcome to YomiYomi Kanji!
This is a website for learning the meanings of kanji and how to read them. There are two types of games to learn with:
This is a game for getting familiar with kanji where all of the questions come with multiple choice answers.
This level is more difficult than the learning level as you need to type in your answers rather than having answer options to choose from. It is much more difficult at the start but is a great way to really test your memory.
If kanji wasn't confusing enough, turns out each kanji usually have mutiple ways to be read! In different situations kanji can be read with either their On-yomi or Kun-yomi readings.
Kun-yomi readings are from Japanese origin and On-yomi are from Chinese origin. The reason for this is due to the history of eastern Asia and how the Japanese language developed over time. There is a great resource explaining more in depth about On-yomi and Kun-yomi by Tofugu, so definitely check it out if you're interested in knowing more!
By the way, most kanji have multiple On-yomi Readings, and also multiple Kun-yomi readings, so you might have 4 or 5 ways to read one kanji sometimes... enjoy!
The only thing you need to know beforehand is hiragana and katakana, which are the the two other Japanese alphabets besides kanji. Hiragana is used for Japanese native words and katakana are for borrowed words from other languages. Learning both is a must for learning kanji, so you should go learn those before getting started with kanji.
Personally, I think using romaji can only make learning Japanese harder. Sooner or later you will need to drop the romaji as you continue learning, and in my opinion the sooner the better. Therefore I won't be including it into the website so as to try and encourage you to get more comfortable with learning completely in Japanese.
Currently no, but I'm working on including that functionality in the future. So keep an eye on the Updates & Aims tab to see what will be coming in future versions of the website!
